A sequel to the 2019 psychological horror film "Ma" is officially in development, with actress Octavia Spencer set to reprise her role. Blumhouse confirmed the news, with CEO Jason Blum stating that "Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019." Spencer, who stars as the titular character, recently discussed the upcoming film on "Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen."

Spencer confirmed that "Ma 2" is "definitely happening" and that the team is working diligently on the script. "Because you guys are a rabid fanbase and if I’m gonna kill somebody I need to do it right," she told host Andy Cohen, referencing the film's dedicated following.

The original "Ma" was released in 2019 and centers on a lonely middle-aged woman who befriends a group of teenagers and allows them to party in her basement. The film gained a cult following, with Spencer's performance receiving particular praise. The actress noted the film's enduring popularity, mentioning it was the number six movie worldwide on Netflix at one point, years after its initial release.

Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum expressed enthusiasm for the sequel, saying, "Ma likes to say, ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round." While the sequel is confirmed for 2025, an official release date has not yet been announced. The film remains in its early stages of production.
