During a recent Mets-Cubs doubleheader at Citi Field, a group of Norwegian soccer fans injected a distinctive energy into the crowd, occupying a center-field section to cheer for the New York baseball team. The gathering was reportedly organized via Facebook, and the Mets provided the group with tickets in the same section.
The fans were in the New York area following a 3-2 World Cup victory for their men's national soccer squad against Senegal at MetLife Stadium. For many, attending a baseball game offered a novel experience compared to their native Norway.
"It’s a new experience, a unique experience, because we don’t have it in Norway, but so far, so good," one fan named Kawar told The Post. "It feels very American in all ways, in all ways."
While Norway does have a baseball league, the Norsk Baseballiga, it consists of only six teams, and the sport is still developing in the country. The Norwegian fans spent approximately 15 to 20 minutes among themselves learning the nuances of baseball before they felt they understood the game unfolding before them.
"It’s a lot different than what’s on TV," another fan commented. Once they captured the attention of the ballpark, their enthusiasm elevated the game's atmosphere, which had been described as having a relaxed Wednesday-afternoon feel.
A guest service employee, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the Norway fans as "just different" and "phenomenal." The employee noted that while fans have been positive at Citi Field throughout the season, the sight of a nation coming together in coordinated chants offered a special feeling.
The Norwegians had previously gained viral attention for their chants and celebrations during the World Cup, notably their "Viking Ship" rowing chant performed in Times Square and at MetLife Stadium. One fan, Espen, expressed amazement at the scale of American stadiums, with another suggesting that "Europeans need to learn something" from the stadium experience.
Beyond the stadium architecture, the fans were particularly impressed by the variety of food options. "Lot of peanuts," one fan remarked. The fans were observed exploring the stadium, showing interest in items like milkshakes and burgers.
The Norwegian national team was scheduled to play France in Foxborough on Friday.
