Noah Wyle, star of the HBO Max medical drama "The Pitt," has revealed the fitness regimen he adheres to while filming the physically demanding show. The 55-year-old actor shared in a recent interview that he completes 100 push-ups every day, regardless of weather conditions, as a foundational part of his routine.
Wyle also mentioned installing a chin-up bar, with a personal goal to perform ten chin-ups by the end of the season, currently managing six. He performs this daily exercise with an accountability partner, Dash Land, who serves as an on-set dresser. This commitment is necessary due to the show's rigorous production schedule, which involves 14-hour workdays, five days a week, for nine months straight.
"The Pitt" follows emergency nurses and doctors through a single shift, with each episode depicting one hour of a 12-hour workday. Wyle plays Dr. Robby, the chief attending physician and head of the emergency department. He previously advised his castmates to be mindful of their physical fatigue during long hours, suggesting they note points of stiffness or pain to better manage their energy throughout the shift. This approach aligns with the concept of NEAT, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis, which emphasizes activities of daily living that increase heart rate.
Wyle's dedication to fitness comes as the show and its cast were honored with the Hollywood Leadership Award by Cedar Sinai Board of Governors for their authentic portrayal of emergency medicine. He expressed his gratitude for the recognition, highlighting his personal connection to the Los Angeles healthcare institution where his son was born and where he has experienced both loss and comfort.
Before taking on his role in "The Pitt," Wyle was widely known for his 11-season run as Dr. John Carter on the long-running medical drama "ER." He recently spoke about financial struggles he faced prior to "The Pitt," admitting that he had spent much of his earnings from "ER" and was seeking sustainable work. This led him to adjust his career footprint for a more manageable path.
