Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have ended their engagement, People reported Thursday, citing an insider who said the decision was mutual.

"The split was mutual and made with love and a deep respect for one another," the source told the outlet. The announcement follows a rapid sequence of public appearances in which the couple appeared together and then apart within days.

The two were last seen in public together on Aug. 31, when they were photographed holding hands while visiting a farmers market in Los Angeles. A week later, on Sept. 7, Dobrev attended the premiere of the film Eternity during the Toronto International Film Festival without wearing the five-carat engagement ring White gave her.

Additional signs of a split emerged online after Dobrev unpinned an Instagram post that documented White's candlelit proposal. The couple, who began dating in 2020, were publicly engaged in October 2024 and had been together for roughly five years.

White proposed with a five-carat ring by Lorraine Schwartz, and both shared images and posts at the time celebrating the engagement. Dobrev wrote "RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé" after the proposal, and White posted "She said YES!" Accounts of the engagement described an elaborate plan: after earlier plans fell through, White arranged for Dobrev to attend a dinner at a New York restaurant called The Golden Swan by sending a fake invitation that appeared to be from Anna Wintour. Dobrev has said White hid the ring in multiple places around their home before the proposal and surprised her at the restaurant, where a photographer was waiting.

The pair often shared glimpses of their relationship, traveling together and attending events. In a January 2024 interview with People, Dobrev described a ritual of weekly date nights in which they alternated planning, saying the practice "keeps things sort of exciting and interesting and dedicates time for the two of us to spend together." She noted that White's training and Olympic schedule had influenced their travel, with her often traveling to meet him.

Reports also noted smaller recent gestures: White bought flowers for Dobrev in Los Angeles on Aug. 24, shortly before the farmers market outing on Aug. 31. The People report did not cite a reason for the breakup beyond the statement that the split was mutual and amicable.

Neither Dobrev nor White has issued a public statement beyond the posts and interviews recounting their engagement and earlier relationship milestones. Media outlets reported that the couple had been engaged for about a year. Further comment from representatives for Dobrev and White was not immediately available.
