Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have called off their engagement and ended their relationship after five years together, a source close to the pair told People on Thursday.
"It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another," the source said. The couple were last photographed together Aug. 31 while running errands in Los Angeles.
The split follows signs of a change in the relationship in recent weeks. Dobrev attended the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday without her engagement ring, and she removed or unpinned images from her Instagram account that commemorated the couple’s engagement, Page Six reported. The pair announced their engagement in October 2024.
At the time, White posted on Instagram, "She said YES 💍♾️," and Dobrev shared images captioned, "RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé 💍♾️." White proposed with a reportedly 5-carat diamond ring by Lorraine Schwartz, getting down on one knee in front of a room full of flowers inside New York City venue The Golden Swan.
The two first met in 2019 at an event for motivational speaker Tony Robbins, where both were scheduled to speak, and they went public with their relationship in April 2020. In a Vogue interview, White acknowledged that he did not know much about Dobrev before their first meeting; Dobrev has said she accepted an invitation to dinner after the event.
Neither Dobrev nor White has issued a public statement about the split. People and Page Six reported the developments citing a source close to the couple.
Dobrev is known for her work on the television drama Vampire Diaries and other film and television projects, while White is an Olympic gold-medal-winning snowboarder and has pursued design and entertainment ventures. The split comes as both continue public professional commitments.
Representatives for Dobrev and White did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The news outlets that first reported the separation described the decision as mutual and emphasized respect between the two. This story is developing.
