New 'Pride and Prejudice' Adaptation Features 'Bennet Bitches' WhatsApp Group

The upcoming Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" is set to bring a modern twist to the Regency-era novel, with cast members forming a close bond that extends to a WhatsApp group humorously named 'The Bennet Bitches.' The new interpretation, penned by Dolly Alderton, author of "Everything I Know About Love," and directed by Euros Lyn, known for "Heartstopper," is scheduled for release in December.

British Vogue has provided a first look at the series, featuring stars like Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet, and Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet. The adaptation's screenwriter, Alderton, shared insights from her on-set diary, detailing the production process from casting to filming.

Cast Bonding and Production Insights

Alderton revealed that the actresses playing the Bennet sisters, along with Olivia Colman, formed the "Bennet Bitches" WhatsApp group. This group served as a constant communication channel during long shooting days, which spanned from the summer heat of July 2025 to Christmastime.

In one anecdote, Alderton noted that the cast took advantage of a day off to attend a Little Simz concert in London, where the "Bennet sisters" were seen enjoying themselves out of their period costumes. "It was strange for them to be not in corsets and even stranger to watch them dancing to hip-hop," Alderton wrote.

The production also faced the challenges of adapting Austen's substantial novel into a six-episode series. Alderton experimented with various drafts, humorously recalling one version titled "the horny tree" draft. She also shared advice received from Dame Emma Thompson, who previously adapted "Sense and Sensibility" for the screen. Thompson emphasized the importance of casting, comedic editing, letting dialogue stand on its own, and clarifying the stakes of marriage for contemporary audiences.

Jack Lowden, who portrays Mr. Darcy, also shared his experience, admitting to initial struggles in portraying the character's brooding nature. Alderton's diary entries touch upon Darcy's reserved demeanor and Lowden's efforts to embody the role.

The cast includes Rufus Sewell as Mr. Bennet and Louis Partridge as Mr. George Wickham, with Rhea Norwood playing Lydia Bennet.
