A new stage production based on George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" universe, titled "The Mad King," has opened to a sold-out preview run at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in the UK. The four-hour play is a prequel to the popular novels and television series, focusing on younger iterations of characters like Ned and Catelyn Stark, Jaime and Cersei Lannister, and Robert Baratheon, under the rule of Aerys II Targaryen.
Despite its initial success in ticket sales, one preview audience member, described as a "Master of Whispers," offered a critical assessment. This source felt the play lacked a clear theatrical purpose, comparing it to a "spec script for an HBO prequel" that was "treading water in favor of exposition." However, the same source praised Michael Schaeffer's performance as Aerys, noting the impressive costumes and puppet work, including dragon and animal puppets, as well as jousting sequences.
Directed by Dominic Cooke and written by Duncan Macmillan, "The Mad King" features a cast of 32 actors. The RSC has a history of staging large-scale literary adaptations, with "Nicholas Nickleby" and "Les Miserables" cited as past successes.
Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, one of the entities behind the production, is reportedly considering a Broadway transfer. However, challenges such as the play's in-the-round staging at the RSC, which differs from typical Broadway theater configurations, would need to be addressed. The potential for a transfer will likely be influenced by reviews from London critics, expected on August 8.
The prospect of new Westeros content comes as HBO's "House of the Dragon" remains a popular series, and another prequel, "Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," is also noted for its following, indicating continued audience interest in the "Game of Thrones" franchise. The article suggests that Broadway, currently facing a challenging season, is actively seeking new hits.
