A new sculpture titled "Lady In Blue," by New York artist Tschabalala Self, has been unveiled on London's Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. The artwork, a bronze figure patinated with pigment refined from lapis lazuli, is inspired by the idea of bringing a contemporary "everywoman" to the historic public space.
Self stated her intention was to place an "ordinary contemporary Londoner" on the plinth, a site often associated with statues of monarchs and military figures. "My work Lady In Blue will bring to Trafalgar Square a woman that many can relate to," the artist said. "She is not an idol to venerate or a historic figurehead to commemorate. She is a woman walking forward into our collective future with ambition and purpose. She is a Londoner, who represents the city's spirit."
The "Lady In Blue" sculpture is the 16th artwork to be displayed on the Fourth Plinth since 1998. It replaces "Mil Veces un Instante" by Teresa Margolles. The "Lady In Blue" will remain in place for the next two years.
