The animated film "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" will now stream exclusively on Paramount+ starting July 25, 2026. This marks a shift from its previously planned theatrical release on October 9, 2026.
The decision to move the film directly to streaming comes amid leadership changes at Paramount following the merger of Skydance and Paramount in August 2025. According to reports, the film was already slated for a streaming-only release before a leak of the movie occurred in April 2026.
This new animated movie serves as a sequel to the original "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series, which concluded with Aang as a 13-year-old, and a prequel to "The Legend of Korra," which follows the Avatar after Aang. Co-creator Bryan Konietzko described the film's narrative structure as a "se-prequel," posing unique writing challenges.
Directed by Lauren Montgomery and written by Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost, with a story by "Avatar" co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, the film features Eric Nam as the voice of Aang. The cast also includes Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Fire Lord Zuko, Dionne Quan as Toph Beifong, Taika Waititi as Gorillavark, Ken Jeong as the Cabbage Merchant, Geraldine Viswanathan as Kallak, Dee Bradley Baker as Appa and Momo, Freida Pinto as Avatar Sonam, and Ke Huy Quan as Avatar Xian.
The trailer, released in conjunction with the date announcement, introduces Aang's encounter with Tagah, a new Airbender found frozen in ice. The trailer also features Zuko, Katara, Sokka, and Toph welcoming Tagah to Team Avatar as they embark on a quest to restore the Air Nomads.
This marks the fourth change to the film's release schedule. It was initially slated for October 2025, then moved to January 2026, followed by an October 2026 theatrical release, before its current July 25, 2026, streaming debut.
The original "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
