Netflix confirmed Monday that it will revive the Winx Club franchise with a new CGI spin-off titled The Magic Is Back, which is due to launch on Oct. 2.
The series will return to the saga 21 years after the original animated show first aired and will center on Bloom, an ordinary girl who discovers she is a fairy blessed with an ancient power known as the Dragon Flame. Netflix said the production will introduce new storylines and characters alongside returning fan-favourite figures from the franchise and will feature a new song performed by Virginia Bocelli, 13, the daughter of tenor Andrea Bocelli.
A synopsis released by the streamer says that after enrolling at the Alfea Fairy School, Bloom meets the fairies who will stand by her as she faces every challenge, forming the Winx Club — six heroines who defend the Magical Dimension while learning that strength comes from courage, empathy and determination.
Winx Club first premiered in 2004 and ran on Nickelodeon through 2019, spanning eight seasons over 15 years. The franchise has since produced multiple spin-offs and adaptations and has remained available on platforms including BBC iPlayer.
Netflix previously produced a live-action adaptation, Fate: The Winx Saga, which debuted in 2021 and was cancelled after two seasons in 2022. The live-action remake prompted criticism from some original-series fans at the time of its release, who raised concerns about casting changes that they said altered characters’ racial and ethnic backgrounds.
The announcement of The Magic Is Back follows a broader trend of streamers reviving long-running and classic animated properties: Netflix has also moved forward with a live-action reimagining of Scooby-Doo this year. The Winx Club revival will mark the franchise’s latest attempt to reach both longtime fans and newer, younger viewers through updated animation and music.
Netflix did not immediately provide a full cast list for the new series or additional production details. The streamer confirmed the Oct. 2 release date in its announcement and said more information would be released ahead of the premiere.
