Netflix is introducing "Sparks of Tomorrow," a new animated series produced by Kyoto Animation, set in an alternate Meiji-era Kyoto powered by steam, where two young individuals strive to usher in an age of electricity.
The series, based on Hiro Yūki and Kazumi Ikeda's 2018 light novel "20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku," centers on Kihachi Sakamoto and Inako Momokawa. They navigate a society dependent on steam power after the pioneers of electricity died before realizing their potential. Kihachi, a cynical repairman, is motivated by the loss of his visionary older brother, Seiroku, who had aspired to bring electrical innovation to Kyoto and left behind his "20th-Century Electrical Catalog." Inako, the earnest and optimistic daughter of an electrical inventor, seeks to honor her late mother and believes in the power of ingenuity and hope.
Their paths cross when Inako, attempting to communicate with her deceased mother, encounters Kihachi. Initially forming a partnership based on Kihachi's repair skills, their connection deepens as Inako becomes inspired by Kihachi's inherited electrical catalog and his cousin Yajiro's artistic projections, which they create using Kihachi's filament lightbulbs.
The narrative introduces a significant conflict with the arrival of Yosuke Mizoe, the heir to a prominent steam conglomerate. Mizoe seeks to acquire the Electrical Catalog, aiming to thwart the advancement of electrical power and solidify his family's dominance. His engagement to Inako serves as a means to get closer to the catalog, adding a layer of personal and industrial tension to the protagonists' efforts.
Visually, "Sparks of Tomorrow" is noted for its striking art style and fluid animation, characteristic of Kyoto Animation's work, with comparisons drawn to titles like "A Silent Voice," "Hyouka," and "Violet Evergarden." The series explores themes of family trauma, innovation, romance, and the pursuit of destiny.
Early reception suggests the series offers a refreshing take on established character archetypes within its unique steampunk world. The dynamic between the hesitant Kihachi and the encouraging Inako, coupled with the mysterious antagonism of Yosuke Mizoe, creates a compelling narrative. The series is being highlighted as a visually impressive and story-rich entry for fans of high-quality animation and original storytelling.
