Netflix has released "Salcedo, Leather, And Boogaloo," a series described as an expansion of a storyline briefly featured in the final season of the Colombian coming-of-age show "Eva Lasting." The new series focuses on Martin Salcedo's experiences after he takes a job at a salsa club, becomes a DJ, and develops a cocaine habit.
The narrative centers on Martin Salcedo, portrayed by Sergio Palau, who becomes enamored with Veronica Pinilla, played by Paola González, a waitress at the Bogotá salsa club Quiebera Canto. Veronica, who adheres to a boundary of not dating patrons, is also involved in a cocaine dealing operation inherited from a figure. Salcedo's infatuation leads him to intervene when some patrons refuse to pay Veronica, resulting in him being hired as a bouncer by the club's manager, Ismael, played by Ramiro Meneses.
Under Veronica's direction, the bouncers also act as drug dealers. Salcedo proves to be an effective salesperson but begins to consume the cocaine he is distributing. Facing pressure to account for the missing product, he resorts to diluting the cocaine with a substance referred to as "brick dust," which causes immediate nosebleeds upon consumption. This leads to him being apprehended by associates of Ganso, a wealthy club regular, after Ganso experiences the adverse effects of the adulterated drug during his birthday party.
"Salcedo, Leather, And Boogaloo" is structured as a series of short episodes, each running approximately three to four minutes excluding end credits. The writing, by Dago Garcia, connects these vignettes, illustrating Salcedo's entanglement with Ganso and a scheme involving the fraudulent sale of cheap rum as a more expensive variety. Throughout these events, the story is largely framed from Veronica's perspective, with the veracity of her recollections left ambiguous.
Paola González's performance as Veronica has been highlighted as particularly compelling, portraying her as the de facto leader managing the club staff and her illicit activities. The series explores Salcedo's progression from bouncer to DJ within the club setting. While the initial romantic attraction between Salcedo and Veronica is a narrative catalyst, their relationship quickly evolves into a professional dynamic.
The series is recommended for fans of "Eva Lasting" as it provides an in-depth look at one of that show's most compelling characters. For broader audiences, it is described as a light watch with a short time commitment, featuring a notable soundtrack.
