Netflix's "Pride and Prejudice" Adaptation Lacks "Passion," Insiders Claim

A forthcoming Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" is reportedly missing the romantic spark that defined previous iterations, according to insiders.

The six-part series, slated for release on December 3, stars Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy and Emma Corrin as Lizzy Bennet. However, sources close to the production describe the adaptation as "desperately sexless," noting a distinct lack of chemistry between the leads and omitting iconic moments like the "wet-shirt-at-the-lake" scene.

One insider commented, "Jack can do hot... but in this he just comes across as grumpy. His neckties do him no favours. He has zero chemistry, I’m afraid, with Emma Corrin. It’s all desperately sexless – no snogging, no wet shirts. Nothing steamy. There is one touch of hands as she gets into a carriage and that’s pretty much it."

This portrayal is seen as a departure from the highly regarded 1995 BBC adaptation starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, which was praised for its ability to convey passion without explicit content. The 2005 film directed by Joe Wright, featuring Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy, is also cited for its effective portrayal of wordless longing.

Further complicating matters, one source suggested that Lowden's wigs in the series bear an unfortunate resemblance to actor Simon Pegg, potentially undermining his sex symbol appeal and his prospects for future roles, such as James Bond.

Despite these criticisms, Netflix has described the series, scripted by Dolly Alderton, as a "faithful adaptation" of Austen's 1813 novel. Emma Corrin shared her enthusiasm for the role, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" and expressing her long-standing admiration for the character of Elizabeth Bennet.

Dolly Alderton noted the supportive dynamic among the cast, mentioning that the actresses playing the Bennet sisters formed a WhatsApp group and took a weekend trip together, with Olivia Colman, who plays Mrs. Bennet, helping to foster a familial atmosphere.

The year 2026 is also notable for its slate of Jane Austen adaptations, mirroring 1995 with both a TV and film version of "Pride and Prejudice" and a film adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility." The latter, starring Esme Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, has drawn praise for her performance.
