The first season of Netflix's adaptation of 'Little House on the Prairie' concluded with the Ingalls family leaving their homestead in Independence, Kansas, due to insurmountable debt and the loss of their crops. This departure mirrors the ending of Laura Ingalls Wilder's original book, 'Little House on the Prairie.'
The family's struggles began shortly after their arrival in Independence when Charles Ingalls discovered that the advertised free land was actually Osage territory. The settlers hoped the town's growth would prompt the U.S. government to compensate the Osage and allow them to remain. While a deal was eventually struck for the Osage to relocate, the Ingalls family faced new financial burdens.
Adding to their troubles, the tenants left in charge of their former home in Minnesota defaulted on the mortgage. Compounding these financial woes, a devastating prairie fire destroyed the crops the family had spent the entire season cultivating. These circumstances left the Ingalls unable to afford to buy the land from the government, forcing them to abandon the log cabin they had built.
The emotional weight of leaving the homestead was felt by the cast. Luke Bracey, who plays Charles Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald, who portrays Ma Ingalls, shared in an interview that filming the farewell scene was an emotional experience. Fitzgerald described her reaction during rehearsals as weeping, finding the moment meta as it mirrored saying goodbye to a place that offered significant opportunity.
Bracey echoed the sentiment, noting the house on set served as a familiar respite during filming. "We spent so much time at that house on set. We were out on the prairie and that was our place where we would sit out of the sunshine in between takes," he said. "It was our little home in the middle of nowhere."
Despite leaving their Kansas home, the series is set to continue. The season finale hints at the Ingalls' next destination when family friend Mr. Edwards suggests they join him in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. There, his sister operates the Oleson General Store.
Netflix has officially renewed 'Little House on the Prairie' for a second season, which is currently in production. The upcoming season will adapt the events of Wilder's book 'On the Banks of Plum Creek,' introducing new characters such as Nellie Oleson, Eva Beadle, and Margaret Oleson. Fitzgerald offered a cryptic tease about the new season, hinting at an underground dugout house and the potential presence of a cow with a hoof in the roof.
