Netflix's adaptation of "Little House on the Prairie" was filmed on location in and around Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, according to the show's stars. The cast is currently in production for the second season in the same area.
Crosby Fitzgerald, who portrays Caroline "Ma" Ingalls, described the filming environment as "beautiful, friendly Manitoba." She shared that the scenic vistas often prompted moments of awe among the cast. "Every day out there we just go, ‘Have you ever seen such a sky?'" Fitzgerald said.
Luke Bracey, who plays Charles "Pa" Ingalls, echoed Fitzgerald's sentiments, highlighting how the natural surroundings enhanced the acting experience. "Being on a stage is kind of stale and you can get tired easily on a stage because there’s no atmosphere, literally no atmosphere, and so I always prefer, even if it might be uncomfortable, I much prefer to be out there," Bracey explained. He noted that being immersed in the elements, feeling the breeze or sunshine, made the job easier.
Bracey also commended Fitzgerald and the young actors portraying Laura and Mary for their resilience while filming in period costumes. "Crosby and the girls do incredibly well because they’re wearing corsets and eight thousand layers of clothing and it’s very, very hot out there some days," he said. Fitzgerald humorously added that the layered clothing "Kept the bugs away."
The stars mentioned that a line from the character Mr. Edwards, "Have you ever seen such a sky?" became a recurring sentiment for the cast, reflecting their appreciation for the Manitoba landscape. Fitzgerald stated, "It is absolutely stunning out there. It’s a beautiful place to go to work."
