Netflix has released "Stolen Heartbeats," a Colombian micro-drama that blends medical and supernatural elements. The series, which features episodes ranging from three to five minutes in length, centers on a hot male nurse who appears to communicate with the spirit of a woman in a coma.
The story begins when a woman, Anabel (Rami Herrera), is brought to an emergency room and later falls into a coma. Rafael (Jerónimo Cantillo), the nurse who transported her, finds he is the only one who can see and hear Anabel while she is in the hospital. Initially questioning his sanity due to past mental health struggles, Rafael learns from Anabel that she is being intentionally drugged by a cardiologist and a nurse with a tattoo. Their goal is to keep her in a coma so her father and stepmother will eventually remove her from life support, allowing her heart to be sold for $500,000 to a wealthy patient in need of a transplant.
As Rafael investigates, the series reveals that Anabel's coma is the result of an explosion in the car she was traveling in. Meanwhile, Carlos (Julian Trujillo), the head of cardiology and Anabel's step-sister Lucia's (Giulia Mantovani) husband, is also revealed to be involved in the organ trafficking scheme, despite his professed love for Anabel.
"Stolen Heartbeats," originally titled "En Coma," employs a fast-paced narrative characteristic of micro-series. The plot thickens with love triangles and murder attempts, and Anabel reportedly falls in love with Rafael while still comatose. The series also explores an attempt to revive Anabel, the reasoning for which is not detailed in medical literature.
Rami Herrera's performance as Anabel has been noted for its range, portraying her character in various states from seductive to comatose. The series contains some medical nudity, primarily during scenes like CPR.
The micro-drama format has been described as leading to a disjointed experience with limited character development. However, the brevity of the episodes means they consume little viewer time. The series is set to release 19 additional episodes on September 18.
