Nate Bargatze’s offhand quip about denim while introducing Sydney Sweeney at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards was aimed at the actress’s controversial American Eagle campaign, a producer confirmed after the ceremony.
Onstage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 14, Bargatze, dressed in an all-denim tuxedo, joked: “I have a blue jean tux on for some reason. Do we have like, a joke, there’s a cummerbund and I forgot what it… I don’t know.” He then introduced Sweeney, who appeared in a strapless red satin gown and did not respond to the host’s remark before presenting the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie to 15‑year‑old Owen Cooper for his role in “Adolescence.”
Jesse Collins, a producer of the ceremony, told Variety after the show that Bargatze’s joke was directed at Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign. The exchange drew attention because the retailer’s summer ad, which launched in July, used the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” and prompted a wave of criticism and online debate.
Critics argued the campaign’s jeans/genes wordplay evoked eugenics, and some called for a boycott of the clothing company. American Eagle released a statement to The Post saying the campaign was “about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,” and adding, “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Sweeney, 28, has largely declined to engage publicly with the controversy. While promoting her new film Christy at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier in September, she told Vanity Fair, “I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans. The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”
Insiders quoted by Us Weekly said Sweeney was focusing on her acting work and did not view the matter as a major distraction. The actress has continued professional commitments, including returning to work with the cast of “Euphoria,” according to the same account.
The episode at the Emmys added a new public moment to a controversy that began with American Eagle’s July rollout of promotional materials. Beyond the retailer’s statement and Sweeney’s decision not to further comment, there have been calls from some critics for accountability and continued discussion among observers online. As of the awards show, neither Sweeney nor American Eagle provided additional remarks beyond previous statements, and the actor continued to promote her current projects.
