Singer Natalie Imbruglia, 51, has opened up about the challenging five-year journey she endured using IVF and a sperm donor to conceive her son, Max Valentine, who is now six years old.

Speaking on the podcast "Begin Again with Davina McCall," Imbruglia described her pursuit of motherhood as "intense and lonely." She revealed that she began her fertility treatments at age 44 and that the decision to use a sperm donor was driven by a feeling of running out of time.

"I couldn't get arrested, I couldn't find a boyfriend. I tried really hard for a long time. And then, as a woman, you run out of time," Imbruglia stated, clarifying that her choice was not a feminist statement but a practical response to biological clock pressures. "Thank God for medicine that we’re able to have that option because women before us didn’t have that option."

Imbruglia also discussed the experience of announcing her pregnancy. She kept the news private for six months, finding the external energy surrounding the announcement overwhelming. "I hid it for six months because the energy coming at you... I just didn't want the energy coming at me," she explained. The singer ultimately felt compelled to release a statement to protect herself and the baby from intense scrutiny.

Upon releasing the statement, Imbruglia recalled being terrified due to her private nature. However, she was met with an outpouring of supportive messages from other women who were inspired by her candor and shared similar experiences. This response led her to realize the impact of sharing her story.

In a previous conversation in June with Elizabeth Day, Imbruglia had also addressed assumptions about her choice to use IVF. She dismissed the idea that she opted for IVF to avoid relationships with men, reiterating that the urgency of her biological clock dictated the decision. She emphasized that modern medicine has provided options for women that were not available in the past.
