An internal investigation was launched into allegations of physical roughness during rehearsals for the West End revival of "Oliver!", leading to the departure of its leading lady, Shanay Holmes, who played Nancy. Holmes reportedly claimed that co-star Aaron Sidwell, who portrayed Bill Sikes, had been physically rough with her during their scenes.

The probe, which is understood to have lasted between seven and nine weeks last summer, resulted in Holmes declining to perform opposite Sidwell. During this period, her understudy, Ava Brennan, stepped into the role of Nancy.

Holmes' acclaimed performance as Nancy had previously seen her perform a solo ballad for King Charles at the 2024 Royal Variety Performance. However, in September, she announced her departure from the show. This exit intensified intrigue among fans due to a perceived lack of public support from fellow cast members, with several, including Fagin actor Simon Lipkin, unfollowing Holmes on Instagram.

The controversy gained further attention when Sidwell, known for his role in "EastEnders," posted deleted lyrics from Green Day's song "Too Much Too Soon," which included the lines: 'Farewell, see you in hell, I hope you rest in pieces, f*** you.'

It is understood that cast members were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements amid concerns that the allegations and backstage tensions could impact the reputation of the production. The outcome of the investigation was never publicly disclosed by officials.

Holmes is scheduled to return to performing next week with a solo concert at Cadogan Hall. A spokesperson for "Oliver!" and the actors involved declined to comment.
