Musician Sachie Mikawa has canceled two performances at the Edinburgh Fringe festival following the theft of instruments that hold significant personal value. The stolen items include instruments Mikawa inherited from her late father, making their replacement emotionally and practically difficult.
Mikawa expressed her heartbreak over the incident, stating that the theft has impacted her livelihood. "Even if I can replace the instruments, I don't know if I will be able to perform," she said. "This is my livelihood and they have taken it away. It's already difficult to be a performer, especially over the last couple of years."
She indicated that while borrowing instruments is a possibility, she is not yet emotionally ready to consider it. Mikawa also noted that the stolen items feature "egg stickers" from her show, a detail she hopes might aid in their recovery.
Police Scotland confirmed they received a report of theft from the Lauriston Place area of Edinburgh. The incident is believed to have occurred overnight between Monday, August 10, and Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Enquiries into the theft are in their early stages, and police have not yet taken a formal statement regarding the specific items stolen.
Mikawa believes her run at the Fringe is likely over for the year due to the loss.
