Morrissey canceled two weekend shows in New England after his team cited a 'credible threat' to assassinate him onstage, the singer's representatives said. The cancellations affected Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, on Friday night, and MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston, Massachusetts, on Saturday. All tickets would be refunded automatically at the original point of purchase. Morrissey, 66, whose full name is Steven Patrick Morrissey, is in the middle of a world tour that has him performing across the United States before a planned run in Mexico later this month.
The decision to pull the two engagements followed a separate security incident involving an online threat against Morrissey earlier in the week. Ottawa authorities said a 26-year-old man, Noah Castellano, was arrested after allegedly posting a threat to kill Morrissey ahead of the CityFolk festival in Ottawa. The Ottawa Citizen reported the post appeared on Bluesky and cited court documents. Castellano was charged with uttering threats to kill or cause bodily harm and was released on $5,000 bail. Morrissey performed at CityFolk on Sept. 12 as scheduled, with subsequent shows in Toronto and New York City proceeding in the days that followed. The New England cancellations were announced days after the arrest came to light.
The episode comes amid a broader backdrop of heightened security concerns at live events. In 2024, Taylor Swift canceled three Eras Tour shows in Vienna after authorities uncovered a planned terror attack targeting her concerts; Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said such threats threaten security and freedom in Western countries. The Swift episode underscored the pressure venues and artists face when threats emerge, even as many performances proceed as planned.
Morrissey, whose career began with the Smiths, remains a polarizing figure in the United Kingdom due to past remarks that have drawn widespread criticism. In the current tour, the artist is scheduled to continue performances in the United States and later in Mexico, with representatives saying safety considerations will guide future scheduling. Fox News Digital reached out to Morrissey’s representatives for comment.
Security and safety considerations have become a focal point for promoters and venues in recent years as threats—whether online or on social platforms—appear to increasingly influence the scheduling of high-profile performances. Morrissey’s team has not offered additional details beyond the posted notices about the cancellations, and refunds are being issued automatically at the point of purchase. The two New England shows were among the first to be canceled on this leg of the world tour, with the artist continuing his schedule in other markets later this month.
