The Moroccan city of El Jadida is being positioned as a viable alternative to Dubai for luxury travelers seeking opulent experiences without the significant crowds or geopolitical tensions. This comes as the UK Foreign Office has advised against non-essential travel to the UAE due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, leading to a decrease in passenger traffic at Dubai's airport.
El Jadida, a UNESCO World Heritage site, combines historical Renaissance military architecture with Moroccan culture. Like Dubai, it benefits from a favorable climate, boasting approximately 300 days of sunshine annually. The city also reflects a rich, diverse history, with a mosque, synagogue, and Catholic church located within close proximity inside its ancient citadel walls.
Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort
A key draw for visitors is the Mazagan Beach and Golf Resort, located about 15 minutes from El Jadida. This resort, which opened in 2009, is described as a sister property to Dubai's Atlantis The Palm, offering a comparable level of luxury at roughly half the price. Despite reporting 100 percent occupancy, the resort's expansive 250 acres and seven kilometers of coastline create a sense of spaciousness and exclusivity.
The resort features 500 rooms and suites, a significant investment exceeding £275 million. Visitors have noted the absence of traffic and construction noise, replaced by the sound of Atlantic waves. Celebrities, including Paloma Faith, Lindsay Lohan, and Naomi Campbell, have reportedly frequented the resort.
Activities available at Mazagan include quad biking over dunes and horseback riding along the beach. The resort offers 15 dining options, with the seafood restaurant Sel de Mer highlighted for its fresh ingredients and acclaimed dishes. The resort also provides inclusive dining packages. For evening entertainment, the 'Studio 42' bar is designed with a 1940s Casablanca theme, and the resort houses North Africa's largest 24-hour casino with numerous live tables. Recreational facilities include two swimming pools and an 18-hole golf course designed by Gary Player. A spa and gym are also available, offering treatments like aromatherapy massages.
Travelers can fly into Casablanca Mohammed V Airport, from which a complimentary shuttle service is available to Mazagan, a journey of approximately one hour. Direct flights to Moroccan cities from over 14 UK airports take between three and four hours.
