Monty Don, the long-time host of BBC's "Gardeners' World," has transitioned from his signature wellington boots to designer sneakers, unveiling a collaboration with sportswear brand New Balance. The £250 trainers, inspired by the concept of 'wild gardens,' are a joint effort with London-based jewellery label Bleue Burnham.
This new venture follows Don's recent announcement that he is stepping down from "Gardeners' World" after 23 years. The trainers are a fresh interpretation of New Balance's iconic Made in UK 991v1 style. The design draws inspiration from the "Flimby Garden," a unique employee garden at New Balance's Cumbria facility, conceived as a restorative space for staff.
The distinctive stitching on the shoe is intended to mimic the free-flowing nature of a wild garden. Each pair features individually applied patterns, ensuring that no two are identical. The initial release includes a brown pigskin suede version, with a premium black leather iteration planned for December.
The trainers will be available exclusively to New Balance's mailing list subscribers starting September 12 at 12 p.m. BST through www.bleueburnham.com.
Don, 71, had previously expressed his desire to continue hosting "Gardeners' World" until at least 2028. In March, he indicated he was in negotiations to extend his contract. He recently stated from his Longmeadow home that he felt "now is the right time for a change," marking a significant shift after nearly two decades on the beloved program.
