Molly McGrath has been elevated to ESPN's primary sideline reporter for its "Monday Night Football" broadcasts, a move that will reshape the network's NFL and college football coverage. McGrath transitions to the NFL from college football, where she covered games for ESPN.
As part of the shakeup, Katie George and Peter Schrager will no longer serve as sideline reporters for ESPN's secondary "Monday Night Football" team. McGrath is set to be ESPN's sole sideline reporter for the games acquired from the NFL Network earlier this year. She will also act as the top fill-in for Laura Rutledge on "NFL Live."
"I’m thrilled to expand my role within ESPN’s NFL coverage and for the opportunity to showcase a broader range of skills, from sideline reporting to hosting in studio, while diving deeper into the sport at the highest level," McGrath stated. "Joining ESPN’s NFL coverage during its Year of the Super Bowl makes this moment even more special and fulfills a lifelong dream."
ESPN's acquisition of NFL Network games, including several international matchups, is expected to create scheduling conflicts for its college football crews. This has led to anticipated changes in other broadcast teams, including the expected dissolution of the second-team booth featuring Chris Fowler, Dan Orlovsky, and Louis Riddick.
Dave Pasch, who recently signed a multi-year contract with ESPN after serving as the Arizona Cardinals' radio voice for 24 years, is slated to be the play-by-play announcer for the secondary "MNF" team. An analyst for this broadcast team has not yet been named.
With ESPN set to broadcast its first Super Bowl, McGrath could potentially be integrated into the network's extensive coverage of the Feb. 14 event, as networks typically expand their programming for the championship game. In situations where ESPN is scheduled for a doubleheader, such as in Week 16, Schrager may be utilized in a sideline capacity. George is being considered for a return to the network's No. 2 college football booth, filling the position McGrath is vacating.
