Mike Preston, a Logie-winning television personality and actor known for his role in the 1981 film "Mad Max 2," has died at the age of 92. Preston passed away on June 8 in Florida, though reports of his death were only recently made public.
Born in London, Preston moved to Australia in the late 1960s and established a significant career in Australian media. He appeared in numerous television series, including "Homicide," "Bellbird," and "Chopper Squad." His performance as Pappagallo in "Mad Max 2," alongside Mel Gibson and Bruce Spence, became one of his most recognizable roles.
Preston was also a prominent television presenter, hosting the variety show "In Melbourne Tonight" in the late 1960s. This work earned him two Logie Awards for Best Male Personality in Victoria in consecutive years, 1969 and 1970. He received a nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role from the Australian Film Institute in 1979 for his part in "The Last of the Knucklemen."
Beyond his acting and hosting, Preston had a career as a singer. He achieved a top 20 hit in Australia in 1958 with "My Lucky Love" and also charted in the UK with songs such as "Marry Me" and "Mr Blue."
His international work included roles in "Highlander: The Series," "Baywatch Nights," and the 1997 film "Steel." Preston's final acting credit was an appearance in an episode of "Law & Order" in 1998.
Preston's wife, Josie, confirmed his passing to Variety. He is survived by his wife and their two daughters. His death occurred shortly before the passing of Kjell Nilsson, another actor from "Mad Max 2," who died on July 2.
