Mike Browning, a founding member and drummer for the death metal band Morbid Angel, has died at the age of 62. The band confirmed his death in a statement released Wednesday.
"R.I.P Mike, thanks for helping make all this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter," the statement read. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Browning, born in Tampa, Florida, was instrumental in the development of the death metal genre during the 1980s. He co-founded Morbid Angel, initially named Ice and then Heretic, with guitarist Trey Azagthoth. He performed as both drummer and vocalist on "Abominations of Desolation," recorded in 1986 and released as a demo in 1991.
After departing Morbid Angel, Browning formed Nocturnus, a band recognized for blending technical death metal with science fiction themes and keyboard elements. Their 1990 debut album, "The Key," is considered a significant work in progressive death metal.
He revived the band as Nocturnus A.D. in 2013, releasing albums including "Paradox" in 2019 and "Unicursal" in 2024. Nocturnus A.D. last performed in 2024.
Browning's career also included work with other bands such as Incubus (the Florida death metal group), After Death, and Acheron.
Tributes from the music community have begun to emerge. Profound Lore Records described Browning as a "death metal legend/visionary and sci-fi death metal godfather." Megadeth's Dirk Verbeuren called him "a musical legend and truly the nicest guy."
Browning is survived by his daughter, Bela, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and called her father "an amazing person and an even better father."
