Michael Wright, an actor recognized for his role as Eddie King Jr. in the 1991 film “The Five Heartbeats,” has died at the age of 70. His family confirmed his passing to TMZ, stating that he died Wednesday in Los Angeles.
The cause of death was heart failure and complications from Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a rare degenerative neurological condition.
Wright, a New York City native, began his acting career in the late 1970s. His early notable role was Clinton in the 1979 film “The Wanderers.” He later appeared in Robert Altman’s 1983 film “Streamers” and starred as Victor Duncan in the 1987 movie “The Principal.”
His portrayal of the talented but troubled singer Eddie King Jr. in “The Five Heartbeats,” a film chronicling the rise and struggles of a fictional R&B vocal group, became one of his most memorable performances.
Throughout his nearly five-decade career, Wright accumulated an extensive filmography. He co-starred with Wesley Snipes in the 1994 crime drama “Sugar Hill” and appeared in films such as “Money Talks,” “Point Blank,” and “The Interpreter.”
On television, Wright played Elias Taylor in the science fiction series “V” and portrayed inmate Omar White in the HBO prison drama “Oz.” His television credits also include appearances in “Miami Vice,” “New York Undercover,” and “Black Lightning.”
His wife, Susan Wright, issued a statement honoring his memory, describing him as an “extraordinary artist whose work touched generations.” She added that his talent and presence would continue to be remembered, but to his loved ones, he was more than his on-screen characters.
Susan Wright expressed that the family was experiencing a profound personal loss and requested privacy during their mourning. "Michael, your work will live forever, but your love will live even longer in the hearts of those who knew you best," she stated. "Rest peacefully, my love. You will be missed beyond words."
Michael Wright is survived by his wife, daughter, and stepchildren.
