Former England footballer Michael Owen has responded to widespread online mockery stemming from a childhood story he shared about his drive for success. In 2023, Owen became the subject of memes after recounting an anecdote where he described himself as "brave" for risking throwing an apple into a bin at his family home as a child, aware he might miss.
During his upcoming reality series, "Meet The Owens," Owen, 46, addressed the backlash, stating that those who mocked the story "don't get it" and are "bloody muppets." He speculated that these critics "[p]robably still living in their mum and dad's house when they're 40 years of age." His parents, Terry and Jeanette Owen, also commented on the story, noting that people tend to twist things and that Michael "always liked to win everything."
Owen, a recipient of the Ballon d'Or and a prolific scorer with 222 professional goals across a 17-year career for clubs including Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Newcastle United, initially shared the apple story as an example of the challenges that shaped him. He explained that the risk of missing the bin and staining the wallpaper, leading to his mother's disapproval, was contrasted with the potential for his father's nod of approval if he made the shot. This, he suggested, fostered a sense of confidence and daring.
The reality series, "Meet The Owens," follows Owen, his wife Louise, and their four children as they navigate his horse racing business and family life. The series highlights the financial challenges Owen faces in his post-football career, acknowledging that owning racehorses is a "bloody hard business" and that he "can't keep haemorrhaging money." Despite a reported net worth of £54.4 million, he admitted to needing to be careful with his finances after purchasing Manor House Stables.
Owen also reflected on his 2022 appearance on "The Masked Singer" as 'Doughnuts,' stating he participated primarily for the financial remuneration. His daughter Jessica commented that while his singing was "questionable," he provided entertainment. The six-part docuseries "Meet The Owens" is set to stream exclusively on Prime Video starting August 28, 2026.
