Michael Armitage Named Among TIME's 100 Most Influential People in Art

Kenyan-British painter Michael Armitage has been recognized as one of the most influential figures in art on TIME's 2026 list. Armitage is known for his distinctive aesthetic that merges East African and Western European visual traditions, often depicting real-world events and folk tales.

Armitage's artistic practice involves painting on bark cloth, an ancient local material, and his compositions frequently draw from the region's cultural history. His work often captures significant moments, such as police violence during Kenya's COVID-19 lockdown or the country's 2017 elections, rendered in dreamlike landscapes with vivid colors.

Beyond his personal artistic achievements, Armitage is committed to fostering local arts infrastructure. In 2020, he established the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute. This organization serves as a platform for exhibitions, the preservation of archives, and the facilitation of dialogues surrounding East African artists.

Armitage's international acclaim is further evidenced by his inclusion in prominent exhibitions. His painting "The Fourth Estate" is currently featured in a group show of contemporary British art at the Nasher Museum of Art in North Carolina, running through July 2027. Additionally, a major solo exhibition of his work, titled "The Promise of Change," is on display at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice until January, showcasing dozens of his paintings.
