Melinda Messenger, 55, has spoken about her transformative journey of embracing her natural appearance, describing the experience as "liberating." The former Page 3 model and television personality has opted to go grey, forgo makeup, and stop using Botox, a decision she says has brought her a sense of freedom.
Messenger shared that she made the change to her hair color four years ago, swapping her signature platinum blonde for her natural grey. She told Closer magazine that she wishes she had made the switch sooner, noting that her hair is now in its best condition ever and that she has saved significant time, money, and energy. The star also observed that her hair has become thicker and healthier.
The public reaction to her transformation has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Messenger, with about 98% of responses being favorable. She noted that other women have shared their own journeys with her, seeing her decision as a reflection of a broader societal shift. "There's always been a heavy negative connotation around women who age, with a view that you should just look the same," Messenger stated. She added that she no longer wants to maintain the look she had in her twenties, preferring to be her authentic self in her fifties. "The tide is turning now - women are realising that we have choices and we can be true to our natural selves. It's liberating!"
Messenger also cited celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Sarah Jessica Parker as inspirations for embracing a more natural look and choosing not to have Botox. While she doesn't object to others trying to reverse the signs of aging, Messenger finds joy in observing the natural changes in her own face. She acknowledged having moments of insecurity about attractiveness but emphasized the freedom in realizing she doesn't owe anyone her looks. "There's nothing wrong with being wrinkly or grey, it's beautiful in its own right!"
Last month, Messenger posted a selfie detailing her decision to go au naturel. She admitted to having "wobbles" during the grey hair transition, using highlights and toners to blend, but ultimately found joy and freedom in letting her hair be natural. "And more importantly for me, I found real freedom and joy in just letting myself be. I think that's the greatest benefit," she said. She also commented on not succumbing to the pressure that women are not allowed to age and that beauty is dictated by those who profit from it.
Messenger's embrace of her natural appearance comes after she claimed she was removed from hosting the Miss South Yorkshire beauty pageant in 2025 because she had gone "too grey." She had been announced as the host, but withdrew weeks prior to the event. She later revealed to the Daily Mail that organizers had expressed concerns about her appearance, specifically her grey hair and recent social media posts about spiritual topics. A request to reduce her hosting fee was also made. Messenger stated that she prefers to focus on the positive aspects and continues to believe in the strength of authenticity and openness.
