Melania Trump will accompany President Donald Trump on a three-day official state visit to the United Kingdom beginning Sept. 17, and fashion experts say the First Lady’s wardrobe choices will be tightly scrutinized amid royal protocol and heightened political sensitivities.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host the Trumps at Windsor Castle while Buckingham Palace undergoes renovations, and the visit will include a grand state banquet. Royal commentators and stylists advised that Mrs. Trump should avoid outfits or accessories that could compete with or upstage members of the royal family, or that could be read as political messaging.
David Loranger, PhD, an associate professor of fashion marketing and merchandising at Sacred Heart University, told the Daily Mail that state visits traditionally call for restraint from visiting spouses so as not to overshadow the hosts. "During a state visit, it's generally a faux pas to wear anything that might compete with your host," he said, adding that overt jewelry such as tiaras or large displays of gems could be seen as poor form.
Loranger pointed to past controversies involving clothing with messages and said the First Lady should avoid garments that could be interpreted as statements. He also cautioned against wearing UK-specific motifs such as tartan patterns, which he suggested could be viewed as cultural appropriation and therefore should be "edited out" of stylists' selections.
Loranger recommended classic, understated looks for the visit and suggested a shift from precedent: he advised Mrs. Trump to favor American designers during the trip. "She's there as a representative of the American people, therefore, she should fulfill that role by wearing an American designer," he said, noting the domestic political emphasis on "Made in America." He added that anything Mrs. Trump wears "could be misconstrued due to increased tensions related to the U.S.'s relatively antagonistic stance towards the U.K. in recent months."
Mrs. Trump has previously accompanied the president on a 2019 state visit to the U.K., when she and the then-president met the late Queen Elizabeth II and attended multiple events, including a dinner at Winfield House. During that visit she wore garments by British designers such as Burberry and hats by Irish-born milliner Philip Treacy, alongside pieces from Dolce & Gabbana, Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. She drew attention for a London-themed Gucci dress printed with landmarks and for a bright red beaded cape dress by Givenchy worn to a dinner at the U.S. ambassador’s residence.
The upcoming visit will take place against a heightened security backdrop. British police have planned what sources described as one of the largest drone operations in recent history to monitor the area around Windsor Castle. Pilots from Thames Valley Police and forces including Hampshire Constabulary will operate drones above a "ring of steel" established on the ground; officials said the policing operation would be comparable in scale to the response deployed for the king’s coronation and similar to security for the late queen’s funeral.
Organizers have emphasized adherence to protocol and the avoidance of any incidents that might distract from the formal elements of the state visit. Fashion choices for heads of state and their spouses are often treated as part of diplomatic choreography, and advisers to visiting dignitaries typically coordinate wardrobes to respect host-country traditions and to manage public perceptions.
As Mrs. Trump prepares to return to Britain, stylists and royal-watchers said attention will focus on whether she opts for understated, classic ensembles and whether she follows the advice to showcase American fashion. Whatever the choice, experts said the garments she wears are likely to be parsed for symbolism and propriety throughout the visit.
