Mel Brooks, the acclaimed comedian, writer, director, and actor, is celebrating his 100th birthday on Sunday. Born Melvin Kaminsky on June 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, Brooks has spent a career dedicated to making audiences laugh.
Brooks' journey in entertainment began after serving in the Army during World War II and performing in the Borscht Belt. He was hired as a writer for Sid Caesar's "Show of Shows," where he met Carl Reiner. Their collaboration led to the creation of the iconic "2000 Year Old Man" sketches, a partnership that became a cornerstone of his comedic legacy.
A Career in Comedy
Brooks is responsible for a string of beloved comedic films, including "The Producers," "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," and "High Anxiety." He has often spoken about his childhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, as a source of inspiration, recalling it as a period of immense happiness and joy.
"I was born to make people laugh," Brooks stated in Judd Apatow's retrospective documentary, "Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!". He also shared that his happiest period was his childhood, up until the age of nine when homework began.
Legacy and Donations
In recent years, Brooks has continued to be recognized for his contributions to comedy. In April, he sent a video message honoring Eddie Murphy at his AFI life achievement award ceremony. In May, he announced a significant donation of his personal documents and photographs to the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York.
"I’ve always been proud to say that I make people laugh for a living," Brooks said in a statement regarding the donation. "So, knowing that my work will have a home at comedy’s national archive and continue making people laugh leaves me with a deep sense of pride."
Brooks has also used his distinctive humor to address mortality, creating a coin-operated gravestone in a 1980s sketch. When asked about death in a 2021 interview, he expressed a lighthearted approach, stating he stopped thinking about it after age 60 to avoid constant preoccupation. He concluded by emphasizing his enjoyment of life and his desire to continue living it for as long as possible.
