Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, revealed Prince Harry's favorite meal during a surprise guest appearance on MasterChef Australia on Sunday night. The former actress, 44, who guest starred on the Channel Ten reality television show, was asked by judge Jean-Christophe Novelli about her preferred dishes for her husband and their two children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five.
Markle described the decision as difficult due to varying tastes within her family. "My husband, being from the UK, loves a lot of meat, potatoes, cream sauce," she said. "As a California girl, I like a grilled fish, grilled meats, citrus. I just like using lots of really pure natural herbs and spices. I like heat in my food, anything with spices."
She further noted that her husband also enjoys spicy food, stating, "He can handle a really good curry! We just do a lot of barbecues, whatever is seasonal. The kids are great eaters, we are very lucky on that front." Markle also proudly mentioned that her children enjoy eating Brussels sprouts.
For her guest spot, contestants were tasked with creating a dish using ingredients Markle selected, including honey, macadamia nuts, citrus, edible flowers, and celeriac. As she presented a table of produce, Markle told the contestants, "my kids eat Brussels sprouts," a comment that judge Poh Ling Yeow found impressive.
When introduced by Poh Ling Yeow, Markle insisted on being called by her first name, stating, "Oh, call me Meghan. Absolutely, yeah." This follows reports of her team's sensitivities regarding the use of her royal title and the word "royal" in promotional materials.
Markle expressed her affection for Australia, calling the trip a "full circle" moment. She recalled announcing her pregnancy with Archie in the country approximately eight years prior. "We love Australia. We had the most sentimental, amazing time. We were here almost eight years ago. We announced we were pregnant with Archie at the time. So, it's full circle, here we are, but thrilled to be here with all of you and taste some really good food," she said.
Markle also shared her philosophy on cooking, emphasizing a relaxed approach and connecting with food through personal stories and memories. "Food and cooking are how I show my nurturing and love for my friends, family and my kids," she remarked, a sentiment that she conveyed to the contestants as they prepared their dishes.
The appearance was filmed during her visit to Australia with Prince Harry in April.
