Meera Syal, the Wolverhampton-born comedian and actress known for her roles in "Goodness Gracious Me" and "The Kumars at No 42," has shared details of past sexual assaults in her new memoir. Syal recounts an incident where an older male actor invited her to his home under the pretense of career advancement, but instead assaulted her. The actor has since passed away.
Syal did not report the incident to the police at the time and did not disclose it to her family or friends. She explained that this silence was a reflection of the prevailing culture within the industry during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Syal noted that when she has discussed such experiences with other women of her age, many have shared similar stories, often remaining silent because "it was part of the culture."
"You wouldn't even bother to report half of these things because A, you wouldn't be believed and B, everyone was doing it," Syal stated, reflecting on the environment she and others navigated.
