The first season of Apple TV+'s dark comedic thriller, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, concluded on July 15 with its season finale, resolving a murder case and custody battle, and teasing a compelling path forward for a potential second season.
The episode saw Paula, portrayed by Tatiana Maslany, exonerated in her murder case and a custody hearing with Karl (Jake Johnson). A significant twist involved the reveal that Dennis (Bartlett), previously believed to be shot by Paula, was alive and subsequently took his own life to clear Paula's name. Creator David J. Rosen stated that while the team enjoyed Bartlett's performance, the decision to end the character's arc was part of the original plan.
Paula's Custody Battle and a Double Standard
During the custody hearing, Karl's lawyer attempted to discredit Paula by questioning her relationship with a camboy. Paula defended her actions, emphasizing her maternal bond with her daughter, Hazel, and drawing a parallel between her search for companionship and survival, and Karl's infidelity. Maslany commented on the double standard, noting that her character's sex life was scrutinized while Karl's was not.
"The fact that she’s on trial because she sought out some pleasure and sexual satisfaction, and she did it in the only way that was available to her and a totally legit way — that that is on trial, her purity, and her worth and ability as a mother, is really fascinating to me," Maslany told Decider. "It’s interesting to me that Karl has an affair and that sex life is never questioned."
The judge ultimately ruled in Paula's favor, granting her custody of Hazel and ordering the child to remain in New York. Paula delivered a defiant retort to Karl, telling him to "tighten your shit up."
Intertwined Relationships and Heartbreak
The season also explored the romantic entanglements of its characters. Paula shared a kiss with Steve (Raymond Lee). Meanwhile, Geri (Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg) and Rudy (Charlie Hall) took a step forward in their relationship by holding hands, only for Geri to discover Rudy had reconciled with his ex-girlfriend. This rejection appeared to fuel Geri's decision to proceed with a controversial article about Paula's involvement with a camboy. Goldberg explained that the heartbreak influenced Geri's choice, making her feel isolated in her professional pursuits.
"This friendship that is happening and developing is real, but everyone on this show is dealing with their own stuff. And I think that while Geri does value the friendship with Paula, there are things that she’s got to deal with. I think she’s like, ‘No one’s really going to do this thing for me besides me. And if this is my best way to do it, is that the choice that I have to make?’" Goldberg said.
A Cliffhanger for Season 2
The finale concluded with a significant cliffhanger. Paula received security footage of a confrontation with her neighbor Caleb from June 2024, revealing she had intentionally threatened him before potentially hitting him with her car, an act that led to his death. A subsequent text message from an unknown sender indicated that Paula was being blackmailed and would be forced to do a favor. The season ended as Paula answered a ringing phone, leaving her fate uncertain.
Characters Brian (Adam Huber) and Cecilia Vanderwalle (Nina Arianda) also survived the season, with creator David J. Rosen hinting at their potential role in a future storyline. Rosen confirmed that ideas for a second season are in development, although specifics remain undisclosed. "We have an idea of what Season 2 will look like if we are so lucky as to get one," Rosen stated.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Apple TV.
