Matthew Rhys Calls Emmy Night 'Surreal' Amid Post-Ceremony Hangover

Matthew Rhys described his recent Emmy Awards night as "surreal" and admitted to experiencing a "very real hangover" following his historic achievement. The Welsh actor became the first performer to win two lead acting Emmy awards in different categories in a single night.

His victories were, however, accompanied by behind-the-scenes footage that suggested a tense interaction with his partner, Keri Russell. Video circulated showing Russell appearing to chide Rhys after he did not mention her in either of his acceptance speeches.

Rhys, who has been in a relationship with Russell for 12 years, addressed the perceived snub in later interviews. He stated that his Emmys would not be displayed at home until Russell also wins an award. "It's a long story. It's in the basement because I kind of said when Keri wins one, I'll take mine out," he told Variety. He also joked about his family's bets on who would win, playfully suggesting he had placed money on himself and that "it's gonna be a rough week for her."

Despite the online speculation about tension, Rhys praised Russell, calling her "always a class act" and suggesting she "is always really the winner, and I think next year she might get one."

Rhys accepted the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for "The Beast in Me." He then received a second award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the Apple TV+ series "Widow's Bay." In his speeches, he thanked various family members, including his parents and sister.

During the ceremony, Russell was observed cheering and applauding Rhys's second win from their table, indicating continued support despite the unmentioned snubs.
