Matthew Rhys Calls Emmy Night 'Surreal' After Historic Double Win and Apparent Tiff with Keri Russell

Matthew Rhys described his recent historic Emmy win as a "surreal" experience, while also acknowledging a "very real hangover" following the night's celebrations. His triumphs were accompanied by public attention to a seemingly tense interaction with his partner, Keri Russell.

Rhys made history at the recent Emmy Awards by becoming the first actor to secure two leading acting awards in different categories in a single evening. However, footage that emerged later showed Russell appearing to admonish Rhys after he did not mention her in his acceptance speeches.

Rhys, who has been in a relationship with Russell for 12 years, addressed the aftermath of the ceremony in an Instagram post featuring a picture of himself holding his two trophies. "A very surreal night but a very real hangover. Thank you for all the lovely messages!" he captioned the image.

The video in question captured a moment where Russell appeared to gesture towards Rhys's hand as he posed for a photo with a photographer. She then pulled him closer for a kiss and spoke with him while patting his shoulder. While the exact conversation remains unclear, speculation suggested Russell's reaction might have been due to Rhys omitting her from his speeches.

Following the event, Rhys indicated in a backstage interview that he would not display his Emmy awards at home until Russell also receives one. "It's a long story. It's in the basement because I kind of said when Keri wins one, I'll take mine out," he explained.

During a press appearance, Rhys also joked about friendly wagers within his family regarding who would win the awards. "Its not playful, its all serious," he quipped. "I put a lot of money on myself... It's gonna be a rough week for her." He also praised Russell, calling her "always a class act" and suggesting, "I think next year she might get one."

Rhys's first Emmy was for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for "The Beast in Me." In his acceptance speech, he did not mention Russell, with whom he starred in "The Americans." He hugged co-star Claire Danes upon accepting the award.

He had a second opportunity to acknowledge Russell when he won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in the Apple TV+ series "Widow's Bay." However, he again did not mention her, though he did thank his parents and sister, who was in the audience.

Despite the apparent omissions in his speeches, Russell was observed cheering enthusiastically and applauding from their table when Rhys received his second award.
