Matthew McConaughey said a little-known year he spent as an exchange student in Australia in 1988 jolted him to reality and helped shape the person he is today.

The 55-year-old Oscar winner told Stellar magazine that he stayed with a family in Warnervale on the Central Coast of New South Wales when he was 18 and took any work he could find — including jobs as a bank teller and a legal assistant — to make ends meet. "I learnt a lot about myself and who I wanted to be," he said. "Those are priceless memories and lessons I needed at that time in my life."

McConaughey said the experience was a sharp contrast with his life in Texas, where he had been a straight-A student and voted "most handsome" in school. He told Stellar that living overseas forced him to find his footing in unfamiliar circumstances and that he "wouldn't change anything because living there made me who I am today, all those years later." He also described his host family as "kind-hearted" and "generous."

The actor's comments come after a different portrayal of the same period in his 2021 memoir, Greenlights, where he called the stay a "livin' hell" and said it had felt "torturous" because "no one wanted to party and the chicks were not digging me." McConaughey told Stellar that the essential lesson he took from the experience was that "we have to be thrown off balance to find our footing."

McConaughey lives with his wife, Camila Alves, and their three children on a ranch in Texas. He said the family practices daily gratitude and intentionally seeks situations that make them "comfortable being uncomfortable." "In the end, staying grounded means caring for yourself, caring for those around you, and giving back whenever you can," he told the magazine. Alves said the mix of "fun and structure" her husband brings helps keep their children confident and grounded.

Before settling in Texas, the couple lived in Malibu, California, during the period when McConaughey became widely known for romantic comedies such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Wedding Planner and Failure to Launch. He has since moved between high-profile dramatic roles, including Interstellar, and projects that emphasize his off-screen persona.

McConaughey's recollections of his year in Australia add to a pattern of the actor revisiting formative episodes from his past in interviews and in his memoir. He framed the Warnervale stay not as an episode to regret but as one that delivered practical lessons and perspective he continues to apply to family life and career choices.
