Actor Matt Ryan stated he "invoked his imagination" from growing up in Wales while reprising his role as pirate Edward Kenway in the Assassin's Creed franchise.
Ryan, who first voiced the character 13 to 14 years prior, described revisiting the role as "quite a treat." He expressed excitement for both long-time fans of the game and new players to experience the character.
The original Assassin's Creed game is a bestseller within the franchise, with millions of copies sold globally and a strong fanbase. While fictional, the game features historical figures such as the notorious English pirate Blackbeard, alongside other pirates like Mary Read and Anne Bonny.
According to Ryan, Kenway's original backstory and northern English accent were altered to accommodate his Welsh accent during production, as the development team preferred it. He noted that the experience of returning to the character after more than a decade has been significant, and he anticipates players' reactions to the updated portrayal.
