Matt Damon and David Letterman surprised viewers with a brief, non-speaking cameo appearance during the season premiere of HBO's "The Gilded Age." The unexpected appearance occurred more than eight minutes into the Season 4 premiere, which aired Sunday night.
The pair portrayed gentlemen crossing a street, offering a blink-and-you-miss-it moment. Damon sported faux sideburns and a mustache, dressed in period attire including a top hat and long coat. Letterman, known for his white beard, wore a bowler hat, a black long coat, and slacks, completing his 19th-century look.
Their appearance was a carefully orchestrated effort, according to Vulture. The idea stemmed from Letterman's long-standing desire to be a background actor. The showrunners for Letterman's series, "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction," saw an opportunity to involve Damon, whose own career began with background acting alongside Ben Affleck. This concept was then pitched to the "Gilded Age" production team.
"We thought, ‘Okay, this could be the perfect opportunity,’" said "My Next Guest" showrunner Isabel Richardson. "It’d be really fun for Dave to do this with Academy Award–winner Matt Damon, and it tied into [Damon’s] origin story really well."
After the idea was initially proposed, it went through several levels of approval within HBO. Executive producer Kate Churchill noted the complexity of the production, explaining that "things like, Matt had to be paid as a background person, but of course he works under his own company." Despite the logistical challenges, both studios collaborated to make the cameo happen. Neither Damon nor Letterman received on-screen credit for their brief roles.
"The Gilded Age" airs new episodes on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
