Matt Bellamy, the frontman of the rock band Muse, has broken his silence regarding his separation from wife Elle Evans. The couple reportedly separated last summer, and Bellamy, 48, has now spoken publicly about the experience for the first time.

"It threw me off," Bellamy confessed in a recent interview. "It's one of those situations that involves something that people wouldn't normally think it is. It was a set of really unexpected circumstances."

Bellamy, who began dating model Evans 11 years ago after meeting on the set of Muse's video for "Mercy," stated that the separation was difficult to navigate. "It's the kind of thing no one really prepares for in life," he said. "It threw me off, and I had to prioritize looking after the kids and creating stability at home."

The couple share two children: six-year-old daughter Lovella and son George, born in May 2024. Bellamy emphasized that prioritizing his children was paramount during the period of separation.

Music as a Solace

Bellamy revealed that writing music became his "lifeline" following the split. He stated that he wrote much of Muse's latest record, "The Wow! Signal," in the autumn following the separation.

"[It was] right in the depths of this life-changing experience. And it was just – boom. It would just pour out of me," Bellamy explained. "It might have been the easiest album for me to make, because it was such a catharsis. It became a lifeline for me."

He added that for the first time, he felt he had his own "existential crisis" to explore through his songwriting.

Matt Bellamy and Elle Evans were last publicly seen together in March 2025 at the MobLand premiere in London. Their split was first reported in February 2026.

Their separation occurred approximately a year and a half after the birth of their second child, George Julien-Wade Bellamy. At the time of George's birth on Mother's Day, May 12, 2024, Evans shared on Instagram that the name honored both Bellamy's father and her own late mother.

Bellamy's ex-partner Kate Hudson, with whom he shares a son, Bingham, 14, also reacted to the birth announcement with supportive emojis.

Bellamy's comments mark the first time he has directly addressed the end of his marriage to Evans, detailing the personal impact and his reliance on music as a coping mechanism.
