Marks & Spencer will make its debut at London Fashion Week in September, showcasing its womenswear and menswear collections on the global fashion stage. This marks the first time the British retailer, known for its everyday essentials, will present its designs at the prestigious event alongside luxury brands such as Burberry.

The move is intended to signal a departure from its previous image, with industry sources suggesting M&S is aiming to prove it has moved beyond its 'frump' reputation and is now a style leader. Stuart Machin, M&S chief executive, described the appearance as a "special moment," highlighting that M&S fashion has been part of "everyday life for 100 years" and will now be presented on "fashion's global stage."

Collections shown at the event will be available to customers online and in M&S stores across the UK, as well as in key international markets. This London Fashion Week appearance follows M&S's own catwalk events held earlier in the summer in Ibiza and at Silverstone.

These events also underscore a new strategy by M&S to release limited-supply clothing 'drops' or lines on a regular basis, a tactic that has also contributed to growth for brands like Zara. "M&S is one of Britain's most recognised and trusted fashion names," said Laura Weir, chief executive of the British Fashion Council. "Its LFW debut brings together heritage, scale and contemporary style, and reflects the continued breadth and energy of British fashion."

While M&S has participated in standalone men's fashion week events, its inclusion in the main London Fashion Week schedule is seen as a testament to the company's recent turnaround under Machin and chairman Archie Norman.
