Emmy Awards host Mariska Hargitay playfully incorporated Nicole Kidman's well-known AMC Theatres commercial lines into her opening monologue, leading to a comedic moment where Kidman herself appeared on stage to reclaim her bit.
Hargitay, the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years, began her hosting duties with a song and dance before transitioning to a more emotional monologue. "I am truly, deeply moved and so incredibly grateful to be in a room full of people who have dedicated their lives to telling stories," Hargitay stated, becoming visibly emotional.
As Hargitay's monologue took a sincere turn, the distinctive music from Kidman's viral AMC ad began to play. Hargitay then recited lines from the commercial: "We come to TV for magic. To laugh, to cry, to care. Because we need that – all of us. That indescribable feeling that we get when the lights begin to dim. Dazzling images on the silver screen. Sound that I can feel."
At this point, Kidman walked onto the stage, interrupting Hargitay with a smile. "No, Mariska! Come on. That’s mine. That’s my bit. You can’t do that," Kidman said. Hargitay responded, "What? No – Nicole, I’m not." As Hargitay continued, quoting another line from the commercial, "Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this," Kidman interjected again, "No, no, no – c’mon. That’s my line! That is actually my line."
Hargitay, with a wide grin, concluded the playful exchange by saying, "Zip it, movie lady! It’s TV’s turn tonight," as the audience erupted in laughter and applause. Hargitay then blew Kidman a kiss.
