Margot Robbie drew attention in New York this week when she wore a vintage Thierry Mugler haute couture dress from the spring/summer 1998 collection while promoting her film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
The 35-year-old actress appeared in a black-and-white, corset-style mini with high slashes along the leg that exposed her left leg as she posed for photographers. The look, which has been described as leaning into the underwear-as-outerwear trend, paired a form-fitting white bodice with a plunging black overdress; Robbie wore her hair pulled back and simple, dazzling silver earrings. She posed for images with co-star Colin Farrell, who appeared in a light grey suit at the event.
Photos and fashion archives show a similar bodice-ripping look from Mugler’s late-1990s runway, confirming the dress as an original piece from the maison’s 1998 haute couture season. Observers noted the garment’s runway provenance after media outlets compared Robbie’s appearance with images from the show.
Robbie’s promotional appearances in New York come as A Big Bold Beautiful Journey prepares for release on Sept. 19. Sony Pictures released the first trailer in June. The film follows Sarah (Robbie) and David (Farrell), who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding and are drawn into an otherworldly adventure after discovering a door in the woods that functions as a portal to their pasts. The trailer shows the pair reliving core memories, including David’s unrequited first love and Sarah’s experience with her mother’s death.
The trailer opens with the two characters meeting and exchanging lines about solitude and companionship; one exchange has David saying the most beautiful places can make you feel the most alone, and Sarah replying, “Maybe it just depends on the person you’re with.” A voice from a car computer then asks David if he wants to go on “a big, bold, beautiful journey,” setting the pair on the path that frames the film’s premise. The preview ends with David saying, “No matter who you are in your life, you just need someone to share it with.”
The cast also includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Hamish Linklater, Lily Rabe, Billy Magnussen and Jodie Turner-Smith. Early reactions to the trailer have been positive on social media; some viewers described the footage as among the year’s most promising previews.
Robbie returned to a slate of promotional appearances less than a year after stepping back from work following the birth of her son. Speaking previously about motherhood, she said: “It’s like, [when] you try to explain to someone who has kids, you don’t need to because they get it, and if they don’t, it’s probably just really boring to hear. So, it’s kind of like, ‘It’s the best.’ ”
The New York appearances included a SoHo outing earlier in the week and a premiere event later in the week where Robbie and Farrell posed together for photographs. Representatives for Robbie and Mugler did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the dress ahead of the film’s release.
