Marcus Mumford, the frontman of Mumford & Sons, has shared new details about how his relationship with his wife, actress Carey Mulligan, began at a Bible camp when they were children. Speaking on the "SmartLess" podcast, Mumford recounted how he first met Mulligan when he was 10 years old and she was 12.

Their connection started as a pen pal relationship, with Mulligan reportedly keeping a journal entry from the day they met. Mumford recalled playfully noting his own rating compared to his cousin in Mulligan's journal, stating he received a nine out of 10 while his cousin received an eight-and-a-half.

Though they stayed in touch as children, their romance did not begin until they reconnected as adults in their twenties. A key moment occurred when Mulligan attended a Laura Marling concert where Mumford & Sons was also performing. Mulligan left her email address for Mumford with his tour manager, and they began communicating.

After a courtship of approximately five months, Mumford proposed. The couple married on April 21, 2012, in Somerset, England, and have since had three children. They are known for maintaining a private personal life.

Mumford told GQ in 2022 that he and Mulligan prioritize their marriage, acknowledging that lasting relationships require significant effort. Mulligan, an Oscar-nominated actress known for her roles in "An Education," "Drive," and "Maestro," has previously expressed a desire to keep her husband largely out of the public eye.

Mumford, who was raised in England, gained prominence as the lead singer and songwriter for the Grammy-winning folk-rock band Mumford & Sons.
