Madonna's latest album, "Confessions II," has debuted at the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 134,000 copies in its first week and surpassing initial sales predictions. The 67-year-old artist achieved this milestone, her tenth No. 1 album, placing her among a select group of artists including Taylor Swift, The Beatles, and Drake who have secured ten or more No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.

The album successfully fended off competition from Olivia Rodrigo's "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," which landed at No. 2 with 103,000 copies. Additionally, Madonna's release outperformed emerging artist Sienna Spiro, 20, whose debut album "Visitor" charted at No. 9 despite several popular streaming hits.

Madhona's success was largely driven by robust physical album sales, accounting for 114,000 of her first-week total, with streaming-equivalent units making up the remaining 19,000. This indicates a strong willingness from her dedicated fanbase to purchase physical copies rather than relying solely on streaming.

In a social media post, Madonna expressed gratitude and surprise at the album's reception, stating her dream was to bring joy and encourage dancing. The album also reached No. 1 in the UK, making Madonna the first American female artist to have a No. 1 album in that country across five different decades.

"Confessions II" has also garnered critical acclaim, with aggregators like Metacritic recognizing it as one of the most critically praised pop releases of 2026. Reviewers have highlighted the album's return to the artist's musical roots and its personal nature. Adrian Thrills of the Daily Mail awarded the album four out of five stars, calling it "uniformly excellent." NME noted it as Madonna's most vital album in over two decades, while Mojo described it as having "shamanic force." The Guardian suggested it is Madonna's best work since "Confessions on a Dance Floor," and the BBC remarked that the initial half of the album is "impeccable."

Confessions II helped Madonna tie Taylor Swift's record as one of the only artists to have ten No. 1 singles and albums on the Billboard charts

Stuart Price, who previously collaborated with Madonna on "Confessions on a Dance Floor" and the hit "Hung Up," produced much of the new record. Other collaborators include Martin Garrix, Cirkut, Arca, and Tainy. The album also features a guest appearance from Madonna's daughter, Lourdes "Lola" Leon, on the track "The Test."
