Madonna has released "Confessions II," her first album in seven years, a 16-track project that revisits her dance music origins. The album, a sequel to the 2005 success "Confessions On A Dance Floor," was primarily created with British producer Stuart Price, who also collaborated on the earlier record.
Described as a "love letter to dance music," the album explores the dance floor as a sanctuary and a ritualistic space. Tracks like "I Feel So Free" celebrate clubbing as a refuge, nodding to Donna Summer's "I Feel Love." "One Step Away" features Madonna stating, "The dance floor is not just a place, it's a threshold: a ritualistic space where movement replaces language." "Love Without Words" touches on various sub-genres, calling dance music a "temple of sweat and surrender."
The music in "Confessions II" is characterized by a continuous mix, with Price leveraging his DJ skills to maintain tempo. The album progresses through 1970s disco and 1980s house music influences. It also includes homages to Madonna's past, such as "Danceteria," a nod to the New York club that influenced her early career. The album features a duet with Sabrina Carpenter on "Bring Your Love."
While "Confessions II" is largely upbeat, it also incorporates personal reflections from the 67-year-old artist. "Good For The Soul" includes intimations of mortality with lyrics like "Time is a river we cannot unwind.. don't forget that." "Fragile" is an elegy dedicated to her brother Christopher, who died in 2024. The album concludes with four ballads that reflect on the end of a party.
"Confessions On A Dance Floor" sold ten million copies and is considered a career highlight. In the 21 years since its release, Madonna has explored genres including R&B, hip-hop, and fado. "Confessions II" is available starting July 2, 2026.
