Madonna and her eldest daughter, Lourdes Leon, have opened up about their experiences growing up in the public eye on the new song "The Test" from Madonna's latest album, "Confessions II." The duet delves into Lourdes's feelings about her "nepo baby" status and her mother's intense fame.

On the track, Madonna sings about attempting to place her daughter "on a pedestal," acknowledging that Lourdes "didn't ask for all the flashing lights." The pop icon admits she did not fully grasp the impact her fame had on her daughter, expressing a wish that she had understood the "pain I caused" and the effect of her "butterfly always being watched."

Lourdes reflects on her upbringing under the shadow of a world-renowned mother, stating that her mother's identity often influenced her own sense of self, from her aspirations to her appearance. She sings about finding a balance between honoring her mother's legacy and establishing her own identity.

Madonna, 67, previously described working with Lourdes, 29, on the song as challenging, noting that her daughter had "held onto a lot of resentment" over the years. She explained that Lourdes was hesitant to be perceived as benefiting from her mother's privilege. "She doesn't want to be perceived as my daughter, taking advantage of her privilege," Madonna told Graham Norton. "She's been very standoffish and working at her own pace."

However, Madonna stated that the collaborative songwriting process "healed" their relationship. Lourdes approached her mother, suggesting they write a song together to address their feelings. "You say exactly what you want to say and I will say exactly what I want to say," Lourdes reportedly proposed. Madonna described the experience as "healing" and praised her daughter's lyrics.

In past interviews, Lourdes has spoken about seeking independence from her mother. In a 2021 interview with Interview magazine, she called Madonna a "control freak" and stated she paid for her own college tuition and first apartment to gain autonomy. "I think my mom saw all these other kids of famous people, and she was like, 'My kids are not going to be like this,'" Lourdes said, adding that she felt paying for things herself gave her parents less "leverage over you."

"Confessions II," a follow-up to Madonna's 2005 album "Confessions on a Dance Floor," was released on July 3 through Warner Records. The album was partly inspired by "family trauma," including the death of Madonna's brother, Christopher Ciccone, in 2024 at age 63. Madonna described Christopher, who worked with her in various capacities before their falling out in the late 1990s, as the "closest human" to her for a long time.

Lourdes Leon has pursued a career in modeling and music. She recently appeared in Madonna's short film for "Confessions II" and co-wrote the track "The Test."
