Mitch Taylor, the 27-year-old reality star known to viewers as "Messy Mitch," said this week that his post-villa profile has diminished and he has returned to his former job as a gas engineer because he can no longer live off his television notoriety.
Taylor told followers on Snapchat that he has largely been offline because he has been "grafting" and working long hours. "I didn't have a nine to five for two years because old rock star famous cool guy," he said, adding: "Now, I'm poor, so I've got to work." He also told fans he is in a relationship and therefore not seeking further television dating opportunities.
Taylor first came to public attention on the 2023 series of Love Island and later returned for the show's All-Stars spin-off. During his initial stint in the villa he was coupled with several contestants at different times, including Molly Marsh, Leah Taylor, Jess Harding, Ella Barnes and Abi Moores. His second appearance on the franchise was cut short after a clash with fellow contestant Liberty Poole that led to his removal from the All-Stars series.
Since leaving the franchise, Taylor said he tried to capitalise on his profile but that the opportunities waned. He told followers that his recent quiet on social media reflected long shifts and a need to earn a living outside of influencer work. He confirmed he has been dating South African TikTok creator Hayley Griffin for more than a year and that they went public with the relationship in July 2024.
Taylor's public persona on Love Island — often described by viewers and press as "Messy Mitch" — became a talking point during and after his time in the villa. He has previously commented on that reputation, saying the behaviour attributed to the nickname was not a separate alter ego but a product of mood. "I think Messy Mitchel comes without me doing it," he said in a past interview, adding that it depended on what day of the week it was.
The update from Taylor follows a pattern seen among some reality television alumni, for whom short-term fame does not always translate into sustainable, long-term income from media work and endorsements. Taylor's statement that he has resumed a trade job underscores the financial realities some former contestants cite once the immediate attention around a series fades.
Taylor remains a recognisable figure to fans of the franchise and has drawn both criticism and support for his conduct on screen. He did not outline specific future media plans when speaking to followers, beyond noting his focus on work and a current relationship. Representatives for Taylor did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
