Priya Jaswal of Love Island is at risk of being eliminated from the villa after her co-stars nominated her for eviction following a heated exchange with fellow contestant Elicia Bailey. The controversy stems from comments Jaswal made about Bailey's £30,000-a-year role at National Rail, which viewers and cast members have labeled as described as 'job-shaming.'
Jaswal and her partner Aidan Murphy are one of three couples facing potential departure after Thursday's episode. Host Maya Jama entered the villa to facilitate a 'Not Another Podcast' challenge, where Islanders revealed their candid opinions about each other, often exposing underlying tensions.
During the challenge, couples who received the most votes were informed their place in the villa was in jeopardy. This included the pairs Priya and Aidan, Julia and Lorenzo, and Micah and Samraj, all of whom await the results in Friday's episode.
Priya's criticism of Elicia's job at National Rail came after Elicia had called Priya a 'game player' on the spin-off show Aftersun. In response to Elicia's comments, Priya launched into a tirade, saying Elicia should "go back to the National Rail" and questioning why she was on Aftersun instead of her job.
Elicia, who works as a team organiser for National Rail, described Priya's remarks as 'bitter,' 'vile,' 'classist,' and 'tone deaf.' She stated on the Love Island Debrief podcast that Priya's comments were a personal attack on her career. "That's crazy, I'm the target. She also obviously hasn't seen other interviews of other people saying the exact same thing," Elicia said.
Other Islanders, including Aidan's brother Kavan, attempted to defend Elicia's job, with Kavan stating, "There's nothing wrong with working for National Rail." However, some fellow contestants, Jasmine Müller and Mica Harris, were seen giggling at Priya's remarks, which also drew criticism from viewers.
Social media users on X (formerly Twitter) expressed outrage, with comments calling Priya's remarks 'disgusting' and highlighting the value of essential workers. Many pointed out that judging someone's career is indicative of the judge's own mindset and that all honest work deserves respect.
Priya's partner Aidan later spoke to her about the problematic nature of her comments regarding Elicia's employment.
Earlier in the week, Love Island had already drawn significant attention, with Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, receiving 533 complaints over four episodes. These complaints reportedly concerned themes of alleged misogyny and 'women-hating'.
